Welding is a special skill that takes some time to master. Some people go to trade schools to learn how to weld, while others are self-taught. Once you know how to weld, you can make impressive creations without sacrificing too much of your time.
If you’re ready to try your hand at basic welding, read on to learn about some projects that will help you refine your skills.
Make your Own Workstation
Assuming you’re planning to weld more than one object, you’re going to need a sturdy, flame-resistant workstation – and with the right welding supplies, you can make your own!
A basic welding cart is nothing more than an open metal frame on casters, which makes it an ideal beginner’s project. You may need some additional power tools – like a chop saw or circular saw – that can cost quite a bit of money; however, you’ll get a lot of use out of a good saw that can slice through metal.
Create a Work of Art
Bob Dylan is more than a musician – he’s also a welder! Dylan creates ornate gates by welding together repurposed iron and scrap metal, like old gears and lawn tools.
Making your own work of art is simple, because there are no blueprints or plans to follow. Just let your imagination guide you as you create new and interesting pieces of art. This is where the mistakes you make as you’re learning the craft can come back as interesting, artistic techniques. When you’re working on other projects, pay attention to your failures (and what you did “wrong”) as much as your successes.
Build a Desk
This simple project is similar to making your own welding cart, the main difference being that you’ll be adding some type of decorative surface. You can use repurposed or recycled metal, wood, glass, tile – whatever materials you have at your disposal – to make a sleek modern desk.
Fix your Car
This project is for the welder who has already finished a few projects – and even so, some people may not be confident enough in their own abilities to try it.
If you’re replacing a muffler, or just reattaching an old one, you can weld it yourself instead of taking it to a mechanic. But don’t tackle this project unless you know you can weld an air-tight seal. Other auto welding projects might include body repairs or additions.
As you become a more experienced welder, you’ll find plenty of uses for your skills. You may also find that – like Dylan – you enjoy making metalworks, just for art’s sake. Whatever your goals may be, start simple and work your way up to more complicated projects over time.
