How to Use King, Queen, and Jack in a Rummy Game?

The most popular variation of rummy is the 13 card rummy game besides others. We will speak of different ways of using K, Q and J in rummy and things you need to know about these cards.

  1. The Face Cards of Rummy

In the rummy game, the three face cards, namely K, Q and J are high value cards. When the points are calculated, all these cards have 10 points value each. The face cards are used just as the number cards to form the melds and sequences. In the 13 cards variation, it is compulsory to make two sequences, one pure and one real. Apart from this, the player is expected to make two sets. Only then can you call it a rummy.

  1. High Value Cards to Make Sets

Sets or melds are grouping of cards where cards of the same number or value are arranged together. The signs of each of the cards used to make a set should be different. For example, in unlimited rummy, you can make a set of queens. For this you need to combine 3 Queens of different signs like hearts, clubs and spades or hearts, diamonds and clubs. In case you have 2 face cards of different signs, you may use a joker to complete this set.

For example, if you have a King of spades and a King of Diamond, you may use a joker in between and call it King of Hearts and your set is complete. This is how you can make sets in a rummy patti game with face cards. You may use real jokers or pulled-out jokers to complete the set.

  1. Use K, Q, J to Make Sequences

Just like face cards can be used to make sets, they may also be used to make sequences. You may make pure or real sequence using face cards. When playing rummy games free or for cash, you may make sequences using just face cards or you may combine face cards and number cards to make sequences. Here are some simple examples to explain the same to you.

You may make a sequence by arranging K, Q and J. You may even make a 4-card sequence of A, K, Q and J. Apart from these, you may create sequences by combining numbers and face cards such as 10, J and Q or A, 2 and 3. All these mentioned here are pure sequences.

When you play rummy online, you may use face cards to make real sequences as well. If you have A and K, you may use a joker in place of the queen. As long as A and K are of the same sign, this forms a valid sequence.

  1. Face Cards to Make Pulled-Out Joker

Apart from all its uses to make sequences and sets, a face card may also be arbitrarily pulled out of the remaining deck to play the role of a joker. In such situations, a face card maybe used anywhere in ultimate rummy, just like a Joker card. If you have a face card joker, the points in the hand also reduce considerably as the points of this face card won’t be counted.

  1. K, Q, J as Open Card

When a face card is left as the open card, in most cases, the player will dispose it and pick another card from the deck. He will pick the face card only if it completes a sequence for him. Otherwise it will add points to his hand.

These are the many different ways in which K, Q and J or the face cards of classic rummy game are used.
